Civics Challenge: Tsunami In Japan1) What is happening? How is the world helping?
The Tsunami in Japan came as a shock to all as nobody had been prepared for this natural disaster. The Tsunami hit Japan on March 11th 2011 and killed many people, destroyed many homes, and put the northeast coast of Japan among disaster and misery.Things such as seaports and airports were destroyed while nuclear power plants were closed down due to the tsunami. Many countries around the world aware of the situation have offered assistance in hope that they can recover missing persons, provide medical care for those who need it and bring essential supplies to the survivors. China’s Red Cross Association decided to donate money ($152,087) towards the disaster relief to try and assist the survivors in finding new homes and food and water in order to survive. The president of the United States, Barack Obama said that the united states would also send relief in to Japan to help resolve the chaos that had been occurring to try to maintain some control of the people. Many countries around the world are trying to offer the best assistance they can with helping out Japan, and with all this help the country of Japan will rescue many people, save many lives and provide many resources that the country may need. 2) How is the disaster affecting the economy and other countries? The Tsunami in Japan not only affected this region of the worlds but also affected other countries economically and physically. Other countries such as India, parts of Africa, Australia and the Philippines also received some of the impact from the tsunami. However, they were not hit as bad as Japan was and there were not as many casualties. Like clarified above, a lot of damage occurred in Japan at the time the tsunami struck and many people didn’t get out alive. The tsunami also caused some economical issues to the rest of the world. In all the world Japan has the third largest economy and when the tsunami hit Japan it sent a ripple effect around the world as the Japan economy plummeted into chaos. The disaster caused 100 billion dollars in damage and things only got worse when only a couple days after the tsunami a severe earthquake hit Japan causing even more damage and death. Japan has gone through a lot of economical strain over the last year and there is no telling whether things will be back to the way they were before the disasters hit. 3) What would you do as a leader? As a leader of a country I would do everything in my power to offer help to the countries who are in need. The first thing I would organize would be a relief group of people who are all different ages (mainly teenagers). I would organize and pay for their trips to these destress countries and I would try to get as many people as possible. I would do this because by sending everyday people they can see how fortunate they are to live in a safe country and not be in danger or at risk of these events. This would be a good idea because, it would allow everyday people to visit another part of the world and offer their own assistance rather than just sending government personnel who would do everything by the book. Both regular citizens and trained employees could travel to these countries and offer help. There would be a lot more people and more relief would be available to those who need it. The next thing I would do was get supplies. I would get local organizations to raise money/supplies and just aware people of what is going on in the different parts of the world. By raising funds and supplies we will be able to ship all these materials over to these countries and also bring a relief effort to desperate countries. The third thing I would do is bring awareness to my country about what is going on. This means creating online media, conferences and broadcasts to report what is going on. With more people aware we can make a difference and speed up the relief process in these desperate countries. 4) Social Media Reports (Facebook and Twitter) Social media has sure gotten the word out about the disaster that occurred in Japan and if it weren’t for these social media resources most people wouldn't know what was happening. Over the last decade social media has been the way most people have found out about breaking news like this and have stopped watching the news on T.V and reading the newspapers. Twitter for example is what most people wake up to in the morning. It is like your own personal newspaper as I like to call it and is the way we find out what is happening around the world (the trends tell us this). I remember the day of the tsunami, I was on Twitter and one of the main trends was #PrayForJapan and I looked into it and found out what had happened. Many post and groups were created on facebook to broadcast awareness of the disaster and this is how people found out. Social media reports bring so much awareness to people about what is going on around the world that they want to get involved and help. |

Opinion Essay: Animal Abuse
Animals are like humans in so many ways and deserve the right to survive without the abuse and harm that is currently being inflected on them daily. The debate for animal rights has been going on for many years and yet in many countries around the world, animals are still living in fear and we must stop this wrongdoing before it gets even worse. There are many forms of animal cruelty/abuse. From fur farms, to the consumption of dogs and cats in 3rd world countries, to the beating of seals with clubs for a sport in Northern Canada. We must all realize that what is occurring around the world is not right and must stop. Animals are apart of our world and everyday life and we must protect them as if we were protecting ourselves from the harm of others.
The first form of animal cruelty that is well known to many people is the mistreatment that takes place in homes with house hold pets and the mistreatment inflicted on livestock animals. These two are linked in the idea that animals are both being treated unfair and are forced to live in extremely unhealthy environments. In an abusing animal house hold animals are often starved (given little to no food or water), given no attention and are often beaten severely causing unbearable pain and suffering. This is not okay and just because animals can not tell us to stop and are too helpless to do anything doesn't mean that it is right to mistreat them like this. According to many people, including one; Marcus Kelley, “ANIMALS HAVE FEELINGS TOO AND DESERVE THE RIGHT TO SURVIVE.” This tells us that just like people, animals have feelings and can feel pain. People may disagree with this statement because they believe animals are just animals and because they don’t function like we do and can’t speak out against the actions we do then it makes it okay to inflict pain on them. However, in reality animals and people are both mammals and we are very similar despite obvious differences.
The mistreatment of the livestock animals is similar to the abuse dealt on household animals but at the same time has some differences. Chicken farms are often looked at as animal abuse/cruelty because of the conditions the chickens have to survive in. Chickens are transported to these farms in crammed trucks with multiple chickens in one cage, this obviously creates some dispute and can technically be considered as animal abuse. Once arriving at the farms, the chickens remain in their cages for the rest of their lives until slaughtered by the thousands. Many people may disagree with the idea that this isn’t animal cruelty, but a food source. However, in the scheme of things animals deserve the right to move around and be able to eat food and not be eaten. The mistreatment of household pets and livestock animals are related and pose a major problem within our world that must be stopped.
The second form of animal cruelty that I think needs to be addressed is one that is recognized on a global scale such as fur farms, The Atlantic Seal Hunt and the consumption of household pets in 3rd world countries, ( ie: China, the Philippines and Korea). Fur farms are a major problem and in my opinion are a very sad topic to talk about because how gruesome it is once you learn about it. Fur farms are places where a large group of animals are brought and later skinned alive for their pelts. Animals such as raccoons, foxes, minks and even cats and dogs are victims of fur farms and are skinned to death. Fur farms are viewed as a for of animal cruelty on a global scale because they can be found everywhere some being more/less extreme depending on the laws in a particular country. Stop Chinese Fur Farms – No More Skinning Animals Alive (a page on Facebook) says “Use your voice and blow the whistle on fur!”, this quote tells us that there are many organizations out their trying to solve the problem of fur farms and that people are speaking out everywhere against. Fur Farms are a major problem and even though it is seen as a business it is still considered an inhumane way of treating animals. Fur is a luxury not a need, therefore we must stop the skinning of these live animals in order to preserve certain endangered species, that are being hunted everyday for their pelts.
The Atlantic Seal Hunt takes place every year in Canada and in my opinion is one of the cruelest events that takes place around the world. People come from around the world and head up north to the areas above Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island in search for seals. The hunt is often seen as a sport to most people is utterly cruel and unfair. Thousands of seals are brutally murdered each year from the result of being beaten to death with clubs. Some seals are skinned alive and just the thought of it makes me sick! To some the seal hunt is not considered an act of animal cruelty, but since there is no reason for killing these innocent animals and it is seen as “fun” then it is animal cruelty and must be stopped.
The last point under international abuse is a very controversial point and is seen differently depending on the person. The consummation of dogs and cats in China, Korea and The Philippines can be called a food source but is it really okay to be eating “a man’s best friend”? According to www.animalpeoplenews.org about 13-16 million dogs are consumed in Asia alone. This number is incredible, and very disturbing if you think about it. Although this is seen as a cultural belief and a well known food source, this is a type of animal cruelty. It is considered a type of animal cruelty because in some cases the animals are slaughtered inhumanly and murdered without reason. Dogs are raised in cages crammed together tightly with other dogs while they wait to die. In my opinion this is unfair and dogs and cats deserve the right to survive without becoming a meal. The consumption of dogs and cats in these countries must stop because it is sickening to look at our pets and say to ourselves “in Asia dogs and cats just like you are being eaten daily”.
The final form of animal cruelty that I think needs to be addressed is the experimentation and testing on animals. The testing on animals takes place every where and in some cases is okay, but when the animal is being treated unfair or is being faced with cruel conditions (both physical and environmental) then the situation is considered an act of animal abuse. One example of cruel testing could be the testing that is performed on primates. These animals are faced with different tests that expose them to different chemicals, vaccines, poisons and other harmful substances. The primates are affected both physically and mentally as scientists test the different reactions each substance has on the animal. The purpose of animal testing is to see how a material reacts with a living organism before it is performed on humans. Since primates have a similar anatomical as humans, st they are a common specimen used in testing new vaccines. The second example of testing that also often occurs, is testing on smaller creatures such as rabbits, mice and rats. These animals are often subjected to cosmetic testing. Rabbits are often tested with new ideas about eye drops which irritates their eyes causing blindness. After the experiment is over the rabbits are killed as there is no longer a need for them. This is animal abuse. It causes harm to innocent animals and even after the experiments are over the animals are still killed as they are “a lost cause”. Rats and mice are also tested and are the more well known creatures that are often seen being tested in laboratories. These animals are exposed to toxic chemicals which burn through their skin. Scientists test corrosive materials on these animals to determine how corrosive the substance is and like the rabbits after the experiments are over these animals are killed and a new group of them are brought in. These are all examples of animal cruelty and even though they help protect humans from deadly substances, their lives are still at risk and millions of animals are dying daily due to animal testing/experiments.
Animal cruelty is a huge topic and there are many forms of animal abuse that take place around the world. From household abuse, to international mistreatment, to the testing of animals in laboratories, we must all recognize that animals deserve the right to live amongst us and that we should find alternative ways to treat them before this problem increases. We have always been taught to “treat others, as we would want to be treated” and it applies to animals as well because we would not want people doing this to us, so why are we treating them differently? We must all stand up and stop the abuse and end animal cruelty once and for all!

INTRODUCTION
As we walk around the halls at school, the malls in the city, the streets, the sidewalks and around the world we always seem to notice a common thing. When we talk amongst our friends and gossip with each other, a common topic is brought up about who is dating who. But is it fair to assume that just because a guy and girl have lunch together it makes them romantically involved? Is it fair to title a girl with a bad reputation based on the types of friends she has? And do you think that just because a guy and girl are close friends in general that they belong together? Well the only thing that explains all of these questions is a little thing called stereotyping. When we see a situation that's repeated over and over again we assume that every situation similar is the same, when maybe its not and could be completely different. This is called stereotyping. Everybody has put a label on someone at least once in their life whether it be about this topic or another topic such as; “all teenagers do drugs and drink alcohol”. These are just examples of situations where stereotyping is often used.
Over the next couple pages I hope to show both sides of the story and the different opinions people have about whether guys and girls can be friends in general, during a relationship and after a break-up between the two. Opinions have been collected from online web sources, real life situations, from parents of teenagers, plus personal accounts of my own experiences.

BEING FRIENDS IN GENERAL
Guys and girls are always seen together, walking around, laughing, smiling and having a good time, but what they don’t pay attention to is what people are saying about them as they walk down the halls. As we know people always think that when a guy and girl hangout that more is going on when maybe there’s not. Being friends in general with the opposite sex is hard and there are man of negative and positive factors. For example being friends with the opposite sex causes less drama especially when girls have guy friends that they can talk to about their girl problems. On the other hand though feelings can develop quickly between two people especially since they’re of opposite genders. This can ruin friendships, and cause a broken heart if the other person doesn't now want to be in a relationship. Depending on the type of people and the age, a friendship between two people of the opposite sex most definitely could work out as it is not harming anyone. Mature people are more likely to be friends with people of the opposite sex due to less drama that occurs. However, in our teenage years I personally believe it is very hard because of them to be friends due to the emotional and hormonal factors that come with teenagers. The quote you see on the first page tells us that yes we can be friends with the opposite sex but sooner or later feelings will develop and I completely agree with that quote. I do believe that guys and girls can be friends in general but when other situations come into play my opinion changes.
BEING FRIENDS IN A RELATIONSHIP
Before going into a relationship with another person we have all come to gain friends, whether it be of the same or opposite sex. Being around guys for most of my life I know how this feels. Trying to be friends with new people while in a relationship can be difficult for the other people in the relationship as a feeling of jealousy is introduced. Half of the time people don’t know why they’re jealous and are mostly concerned about losing their significant other to this new person who has come into their life. Some people get paranoid and get mental pictures in their mind about what might be going on and sometimes it tears them apart to a point where they’re always worrying. In this situation I think the people in the relationship deserve to have friends but if its affecting the other persons emotions so much that they are paranoid all the time then limits should be set to try to calm the other person. People in relationships want to do everything they cannot to tie down the other person from living a life outside of the relationship but when they love someone so much and they are hanging out with someone else that jealousy factor takes over and you’re afraid to say whats on your mind due to the idea that you don’t want to hurt them. This situation is hard for couples everywhere and sometimes they just don't know what to do. But f you love someone and trust them, then try not to worry because everything happens for a reason and things will work out in the end.
FRIENDSHIP AFTER A BREAK-UP
In my opinion a friendship after a break-up is a very complicated matter with many factors. Break-ups can be very hard on some people and it can take months to get over one person. Sometimes being friends just isn't an option. However, as time goes on and we mature and the feelings go away then eventually I think it is possible for two ex-lovers to become friends again. However, if one person moves on and becomes into a committed relationship then the friendship becomes a little more difficult to handle as one person gets jealous of the other for moving on. People who are mature enough to handle a friendship with their ex-lover and still handle their current relationship can be friends, but if the ex causes drama for the other person’s relationship then things need to change to benefit the relationship.
CONCLUSION
To conclude, guys and girls can be friends in the right situations and in the more difficult situations things might have to change to either benefit your own life or another person completely. We shouldn't stereotype people about who they chose to be friends with because it is their life and they deserve to live it however they want to.
